A philosophical examination of race and gender. The course explores considerations from metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, and the philosophy of language that bear on how race and gender are categorized, understood, and discussed. Students will study whether, and in what sense, race and gender distinctions are "real", socially significant, or normatively important. The course also examines ethical, epistemic, and communicative challenges posed by racial and gendered categories, including issues related to racism and sexism, with an emphasis on careful argumentation and respectful inquiry.
