Study of the geotechnical aspects of waste containment systems and contaminant remediation applications. Analysis and measurement of flow of water and contaminants through saturated and unsaturated soils, clay mineralogy and soil-chemical compatibility, and mechanical and hydraulic behavior of geomembranes, geotextiles, and geosynthetic clay liners. Design and construction aspects of compacted clay and composite landfill liners, drainage systems, and landfill covers. Prerequisite: °ä³Õ·¡³ÒÌý31302 or graduate standing. Physical and cultural landscapes, natural and cultural resources, art and architecture, land use, political history, OPEC, and current problems of North Africa and the Middle East region west of Afghanistan are discussed. Class participation, discussions, slides and films, and student presentations will round out the class. Graduate degree credit will not be given for both ³Ò·¡°¿³§Ìý40403 and ³Ò·¡°¿³§Ìý51803.
